The new laws would protect access to the medication abortion drugs and penalize those who interfere with reproductive rights, officials said.

In anticipation of more hostility toward abortion under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, California lawmakers announced two new pieces of legislation Monday aimed at protecting medication abortion and punishing local governments that interfere with access to reproductive health care.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Monday support for new legislation aimed at preserving reproductive rights.

While Delaware's protections, known as shield laws, protect against "out-of-state investigations and prosecutions, professional discipline and civil liability related to reproductive health care," according to UCLA's Center on Reproductive Health, Law and Policy, the ACLU said the laws don't protect against action taken by the federal government.

One bill would protect access to abortion drugs. Another would allow the state attorney general to seek financial penalties against cities that obstruct abortion providers.
