Pressure mounts on Labour as an ever-increasing number of people put their names to pub landlord Michael Westwood's call for a new national vote

A petition calling for the government to call an immediate general election has hit two million signatures in the space of two days.

Keir Starmer has until 2029 at the latest to call the election, and most observers believe he is unlikely to do so until summer 2028 at the earliest. Given Labour’s huge 170-seat Commons majority, the chances of the government losing a vote of confidence - another way in which an election can be triggered - are virtually nil.

Squirming Keir Starmer ruled out calling a General Election after a petition demanding another vote passed two million signatures. The Prime Minister was asked about the viral petition on the Parliament website which accuses Labour of breaking promises during a grilling on ITV's This Morning.
