General Motors and Cadillac face a “monumental task” to get ready to compete in Formula One for 2026, even if they could in theory get a head start on some design work, leading series figures said. The announcement last week General Motors’ Cadillac brand will be joining the grid as the 11th team from 2026 has been broadly greeted by drivers.

The Cadillac F1 team will utilize power units built by Ferrari until GM begins producing its own engines in 2028.

General Motors has a deal to join Formula 1 under the Cadillac brand and participate in the FIA Formula One World Championship for the 2026 season, the automaker announced on Monday. Formula 1 says it has accepted in principle and will move GM and Cadillac's application forward to become the 11th team on the grid — making it the first new team to join since 2016.

Teams say they're trusting Formula 1 officials who say the financial part of the GM entry works for the sport.

The 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter.
